UNIT: GUN ISSUES

TOPIC:  BACKGROUND TO ISSUE

LEARNING TARGET:

1.    I will understand both sides of the issue: open carry in educational settings

2.  I will identify the major "common sense" gun regulations that would reduce gun violence

STUDENT OUTCOME:

1.   will establish a data-based reasoned position on the issue: Should adults be allowed to open carry in schools.

2.  I will identify the major "common sense" gun regulations that would reduce gun violence

STATE STANDARDS:

CG4

COMMON CORE:

READING Standards

Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material understudy; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well reasoned exchange of ideas.

b. Work with peers to promote civil, democratic discussions and decisionmaking,

set clear goals and deadlines, and establish individual roles as

needed.

REMINDERS:

NONE

LESSON:

1.  Reflection writing on gun debate; open carry

2.  MLive article: Gov. Snyder and weapons in schools

3.  TASK:

In groups construct a list of four "common sense" measures that would work to reduce gun violence and not infringe on the rights associated with the 2nd Amendment.  Use various websites and list the measures along with a brief discussion on evidence and reasoning that would support each of your proposals.  You will have today and tomorrow to complete this.

The proposals don't have to be highly detailed and in fact the stronger ones will be more general at the start.  Each proposal however must be considered against each of the elements below:

  • How practical is it?
  • Is the cost realistic?
  • What is the danger of violating the 2nd Amendment?
  • What is the benefit vs the cost?
  • Will a majority of the nation "buy into" the proposal?

Each group will construct a slide show which will list the proposals and then have an individual slide which provides the supporting information for each proposal. There are many proposals out there from many different groups.
